Mr. Elijio Curiel, born May 1954, started his karate training in 1973 in Tucson Arizona. Originally studying under Mr. Clyde Kakimoto at the University of Arizona, he later joined the Dow Sensei dojo which at that time was known as Shotokai Karate of Tucson. In the summer of 1975 he traveled to Atsugi to train in the Kawanabe dojo for 2 months and was awarded his Sho Dan at that time. Mr. Curiel continued his karate training in Tucson under both the Kakimoto and Dow dojos as well as making frequent trips to Atsugi Japan. Master Kawanabe also traveled to Tucson many times and introduced the hachiriki and hachiken to Arizona karate students in the mid 1980s. In 1994, Mr. Curiel started his own dojo at a local gymnasium where he taught a small class of faithful students. The Curiel dojo later moved to the El Rio Neighborhood Center in Tucson where he currently teaches both children and adults twice a week. Mr. Curiel travels to Atsugi Japan on a regular basis to continue his budo training under the careful scrutiny of Master Kawanabe. He currently holds a 8th Dan under Kawanabe Karate Do.

Shihan George White started his martial arts training in the fall of 1971 while attending the University of Arizona. Shihan White is a 30 year veteran of law enforcement, retiring at the rank of lieutenant from the Pima County Sheriff’s Department in 2007. During his tenure in law enforcement as part of his duties he was tasked with the development, standardization and implementation of training in the area of proficiency skills, specializing in defensive tactics and the use of force continuum. Shihan White is a recognized expert in defensive tactics and use of force justification clarification as it applies to judicial review. Shihan White currently holds the 7th dan rank in Kawanabe karate-do with all certifications completed at world headquarters in Atsugi Japan under the the direction and review of Master Kawanabe.
